The Daily Gamecock celebrates its 108 birthday

The Daily Gamecock celebrates its 108 birthday on January 30. This day marks the anniversary of when the paper, then called simply The Gamecock, published its first edition.

The front page of the first edition had two stories: an article on the retirement of a professor and an article on the school's football team.

That first issue was one of just three issues produced that first semester, but by the next semester the paper had begun publishing weekly. In 2006, the name officially changed to The Daily Gamecock as the paper became the first student-run paper to publish daily in South Carolina.

Today, The Daily Gamecock publishes a broadsheet edition Monday through Wednesday along with a tabloid-style Weekender on Thursdays and daily content on dailygamecock.com. Nine editions are also published over the course of the summer semester. According to the South Carolina Press Association, it is the 15th largest newspaper in South Carolina.

The paper is under the umbrella of Student Media, which also includes Garnet & Black magazine, WUSC and SGTV. It maintains editorial independence from the University.

Throughout its history The Daily Gamecock has provided award-winning coverage of a wide variety of stories of local, statewide and national significance. Since its centennial celebration in 2008 alone the paper has chronicled the election of the nation's first African-American president, two NCAA national championships and historic flooding throughout the state.
