An armed robbery took place at a Shell gas station on 803 Assembly St. early Friday morning.

The suspect, described as light skin Black male wearing black pants, a red shirt, a green mask and black slides with white socks, fled east on College Street towards campus, according to a Carolina Alert sent to students at 5:45 a.m. The man was also seen carrying a blue bag.

Officers arrived on the scene after an alarm went off at the gas station, according to a post on X, formerly known as Twitter. The male suspect reportedly stole money from the register prior to fleeing.

Officials said the suspect was believed to not have shown a weapon, but threats were made against an employee at the Corner Pantry inside of the Shell.

No injuries were reported, and the suspect is believed to no longer be in the area as of 6:24 a.m, according to a Carolina alert sent out to student at 6:35 a.m.

At the time of this report, the suspect has still yet to be arrested.

The robbery is being investigated by the Columbia Police Department and the USC Police Department.

University spokseperson Jeff Stensland said students can help remain safe by signing up for Carolina Alerts and downloading the Rave Guardian app.
