Well, it’s finally over. And once again, the spirit of American democracy has prevailed and we as citizens have elected a man to be our leader for the next four years. This campaign period will probably go down in the books as one of the most controversial and talked about since the infamous Gore/Bush recount of 2000, with both sides of the political mat hurling verbal mud mixed with jabbing insults and a few intelligent statements tossed into the mix.
A college student’s guide to spooky and spirited Halloween etiquette
It’s time.
If you’re a student at the University of South Carolina, today is a very special day for you — and no, it’s not just Thirsty Thursday. Today not only marks the halfway point of this semester (thank goodness), but it also means that fall break is a mere week away. While many of you will be taking fancy vacations or heading home for the long weekend to visit family and wash a few loads of laundry, the rest of us will be keeping an eye on Columbia. But just because you’re “staying in” for this break, doesn’t mean you can’t explore the great state outside of the capital city. South Carolina has a lot to offer, some of which even you natives may not know about. And don’t worry; not every road trip has to involve backseat games of mini checkers with only half the pieces and your older brother playing the “I’m not touching you” game.
Every year, our capital city gears up for a week-and-a-half-long party. Countless rides, food vendors and entertainment stages will pop up overnight, lighting up the fairgrounds with a buzz of electric energy and old-time music, an open invitation to thousands of South Carolina residents near and far to come and revel. There are plenty of reasons to visit the fair this year, but since it’s a mere two weeks away, here are a few of the best.
Mary Cathryn Armstrong’s guide to campus characters
There is a magical place where life-size Technicolor dinosaurs and wolves gyrate and mingle with giant, creamy cupcakes puffed as big as clouds. Smiling Popsicles bob alongside karate-kicking toddlers. Sidling down the street comes a rather flirtatious purple roadster, batting her big blue eyes and puckering sparkly red lips as you slide into the passenger seat. And the driver? Why it's none other than California's own Kreayshawn.
The Girl Who Just Wants to Dance
Dear Girl in Gym Shorts,
Good rock and roll music is like a beautiful woman. Sultry, hip-swaying rhythms, lean, lithe legs. Lush harmonies and achingly long chord progressions trace the lines of a slender body, perfectly curved in all the right places with inflections of tone and deep melody.
Well Gamecocks, that time of year is finally upon us. No, it’s not the magic moment where the vaporizing heat reaches its breaking point and settles into less sweat-inducing temperatures — yes, this weekend was pleasant but trust me, it was just a trick. ’Tis the season of Carolina football; yet again we must break out the garnet and black spilling out of dresser drawers and dust off that Cocky-shaped hat that sits poised on the desk lamp. Since many of you will be making your first trek down to the sacred tailgating territory, there are a few politics of the Gamecock stomping grounds that everyone (even a seasoned pro) should know about.
For Beau Owens, this Saturday is going to start off a little bit earlier than most.
Tucked in between the busy streets of Five Points and the commercialized section of Garners Ferry sits Devine Street, a quiet neighborhood area that specializes in unique boutique-style shopping and delectable restaurant fare.
DO Wipe the Machines Down
About ten minutes into the interview, she had to stop and greet a fan.
Tucked in between Flying Saucer and Uncle Louie’s on Park Street in the Vista, Columbia’s Oyster Bar beckons local regulars and new customers with open doors.
Several areas of the Internet experienced a blackout on the eve of Tuesday, March 13. But this time it wasn't another anti-SOPA campaign initiated by the free-speaking meme creators and viral video viewers of the world. This time, it was just Wiz.
