Expectations, quick fame hurt athletes

In classes and dorm rooms across campus yesterday, students were celebrating USC scoring Jadeveon Clowney, the top football recruit in the nation. As a huge football fan, I was ecstatic to see Clowney join our team. It was also wonderful seeing the student body so united. These kind of events are those great for school and team spirit.

Young football players must earn their fame

College football fans have several days they circle on their calendar every year: the first days of spring and fall practice, the first game of the season and conference championship games. But one of the biggest days in a college football fan’s year, and one of the biggest days for college football, period, is National Signing Day.

Ticket or no, get excited for game

Whether driving to Atlanta or local bar, savor this unprecedented sports event The SEC Championship has finally arrived. We are a mere four days away from doing something that no South Carolina Gamecock football team has ever done: play for the SEC title. We have endured all the heartbreak and trials. We have seen victorious upsets and commanding wins over strong teams. In short, we have been through the highs and lows that are Carolina football.

Bowl scenarios still murky for USC as title game approaches

Win sends Gamecocks to Sugar Bowl, loss muddles situation CLEMSON – Depending on how South Carolina fairs in its first SEC Championship Game in school history five days from today, its bowl outlook is either incredibly simple or incredibly complex. Upset No. 2 Auburn, and the Gamecocks are headed to New Orleans and the Sugar Bowl as the SEC’s automatic BCS bid.

Defense shines in victory

Gamecocks continue to improve once-struggling secondary CLEMSON -- The South Carolina defense has a tendency to not let the big play bother them. Just like in the Florida game on Nov. 13, in which the Gators returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, the defense stood firm after Clemson scored on its first possession of the game.

Takedown in Tigertown: USC pounds rival Clemson

Gamecocks grab rare second consecutive win over Tigers CLEMSON — The Gamecocks knew all about their lack of sustained success against the in-state rival Clemson Tigers. The stats backed it up. South Carolina hadn’t defeated the Tigers in consecutive seasons since winning three straight from 1968-1970.

Kratch: USC can win without Lattimore

With freshman struggling, Gamecocks take to skies against Clemson secondary CLEMSON – It should shock no one that when a South Carolina student-athlete’s name is announced here prior to kickoff, it is quickly drowned out with a hearty harmony of boos and heckles. It should also shock no one that the Gamecock who had the most catcalls directed at him was Marcus Lattimore.

In our opinion: Students need to give thanks for win

We did it. For the first time in 40 years, the Carolina Gamecocks beat the Clemson Tigers two years in a row. This is obviously a very big deal, and since it is not too far past Thanksgiving, it is only appropriate for all Carolina fans to be grateful and give thanks for the incredible season our football team has had this year.
