Columbia Uber driver promotes rideshare safety with his car, 'Watermelon Crawl'

Columbia native and Uber driver Mike Sloan is educating USC students on rideshare safety in his car, dubbed the "Watermelon Crawl." The nickname originates from Tracy Byrd's song "Watermelon Crawl," where he says, "If you drink, don't drive — do the watermelon crawl." Sloan advises riders on safety measures, gives free seminars to student groups and posts his interactions and advice on his TikTok account.

Building a Brain club researches computational neuroscience, promotes mental health

USC's interdisciplinary Building a Brain club will launch research projects on computational neuroscience and behavioral psychology in the fall 2026 semester. The club also teaches students how to build a healthy brain through mental health advocacy and service.

Nursing Language & Communication Society dissolves linguistic, cultural barriers in health care

The Nursing Language & Communication Society promotes health care equity by teaching common medical terminology in Spanish and American Sign Language. It prepares future health care providers to treat diverse populations through interactive workshops and games and promotes connection among nursing students.

Gamecock Emergency Medical Students hosted a helicopter landing and emergency-medicine lecture at Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center on Friday. Students learned about pediatric trauma, explored the inside of the helicopter, and spoke with flight medics and nurses from Air Methods.
