Local artist Thomas Humphries has been creating sculptures out of repurposed items since college. The medium has allowed Humphries to express passion through welding found materials into art, he said. Humphries' work can be found at the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, South Carolina State Fairgrounds, West Columbia Riverwalk and other spaces throughout Columbia.

Public murals, sculptures connect Columbia artists to community

Columbia's streets showcase an abundance of public art. Some are sculptures made out of repurposed material, while others are murals depict the values of that community. The artists behind these creations said the public displays help make art more accessible to the average person, forming a connection between the creator and its community.

Restaurant Week is just around the corner. Here's what to expect

Local restaurants in the Midlands particpate each year in a week full of new creations and special deals. Restaurant Week, hosted by the South Carolina Restaurant and Lodging association, looks to help draw customers back into the eating-out scene after the holiday season. For some its a chance to try out new recipes or creations, but for others, it provides an opportunity for members of the restaurant industry to grow their own community.
