Downed registers mean free food for some Thursday

It was a happy Valentine’s Day indeed for some lucky customers at the Russell House Taco Bell and Pizza Hut.

When the registers at the counters went down shortly before noon Thursday, patrons were asked to place their orders at the Taco Bell pick-up counter and handed a cup and told to have a “Happy Valentine’s Day” by Carolina Dining’s operations director, Tiffany Bell.

“We’re not able to ring up any transactions, so we’ve been having to give the food that was already prepared away when they order it,” said Cynthia Steele, marketing manager for Dining.

Bell said the registers had only been down for a couple of minutes, and in cases like these, she just likes to keep the line moving.

Steel said the issue was related to the data lines in the registers. She compared the problem to times when students can’t access university Wi-Fi.

“We’re just trying to make a glitch into a temporary Valentine’s Day surprise,” she said.
