Steve Spurrier's initial plan after the Florida job was simple: coaching in the NFL for five or six years, retire to the beach and travel and play lots of golf. He said that in 2014 during an SEC Media day.

But the plan didn't quite work out, with 2 losing seasons in the NFL with the Washington Commanders in 2002 and 2003.

Decades after this failure, Spurrier was inducted into the South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame in May 2026, which includes the entire state. A month later, he was announced as part of the University of South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2026.

How did such a turnaround take place in Spurrier's coaching career? Well, in 2004, he pivoted to accept a new challenge in Columbia following the retirement of Lou Holtz.

The head football coach, known for his legendary Heisman-winning football career and SEC and National Championship winning coaching career at Florida, brought a new perspective from his NFL experience.

"I learned a lot more humility… Maybe I was a little arrogant, maybe I ran my mouth more than I should,” said Spurrier in the conference announcing his arrival.

Spurrier's first five seasons at South Carolina were modest. From 2005-09 Carolina’s football record was 7-5, 8-5, 6-6, 7-6, and 7-6 and featured some impressive wins, streaks and 4 bowl game appearances. It also featured the typical one step forward, two steps back dance that Carolina fans are familiar with.

South Carolina eventually broke through in 2010, winning the SEC East before posting three consecutive 11-win seasons from 2011-13.

Spurrier coached all three of South Carolina’s top 10 finishes in its program history, five bowl wins and its only defeat of a No.1 ranked team with a 35-21 defeat of the Alabama Crimson Tide in 2010.

Spurrier also helped develop many great Gamecock football players in his 11 seasons as head coach. He had 2 consensus All-Americans, Jadeveon Clowney in 2012 and Melvin Ingram in 2011 and 38 players selected in the NFL draft.

Sometimes when your plans go wrong, they actually go right, and that detour helped define one of the most successful coaching tenures in South Carolina football history.

"We definitely enjoyed our time here," Spurrier said on his time at USC in an interview with WIS News 10. "Some of the wins we had along the way were historic. That's the fun part to me about coaching, when you're able to do things that have never been done before."
