At the University of South Carolina, some professors see the use of personal electronics in class as a detriment to learning and therefore ban their use during lecture. While this can be argued effectively in that students are proven to retain more information when they handwrite notes, one can contend that banning electronics altogether hurts classroom dynamics and students.

Across the country, Division I athletes sign over their souls to the NCAA in order to get a taste of experiences like Williams-Brice on game day and a scholarship to college they may not have been able to afford otherwise. What they don’t necessarily realize is that, in addition to committing their body and time to their university and their sport, they are also signing away their name, image and likeness.

In low level courses, group projects are not only a terrible teaching tool, but are also a waste of student time. By forcing students to move around an already busy schedule and work with others that have varying levels of commitment, the projects become more hassle than they are worth and a poor example of group work in a company.

As a college student, I have to constantly juggle multiple things at once: classes, homework, my job, well-being, relationships and more. Since I have so many things weighing on my shoulders, I find that I sometimes don’t have the time to put the most effort into my papers and homework and studying for tests can also be a struggle. This leaves me constantly worried and stressed about my grades, and I sometimes fear the worst — failing my classes.

November is upon us, and while for many of the students of USC this is a time of brisk fall air, pumpkin spice lattes and Thanksgiving break, many people around our community are suffering because of lack of shelter from the increasingly cold weather.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has historically made no move to promote the use of electronic cigarettes as a tool for quitting smoking traditional cigarettes. It instead focuses on the possibility of it being a gateway to increased smoking rates, its health risks and its promotion of illegal activities. The WHO should instead be pushing for e-cigarette use because these arguments weaken when placed beside their more dangerous alternatives.

With many new and wacky health treatments coming up every day, there is one that has become exceedingly popular and researched. CBD, or cannabidiol, is proving time and again to be an effective treatment for a range of illnesses. It has even been partly approved by the FDA. However, despite more doctors and health specialists recommending CBD as a treatment, the drug is still not covered by insurance or even completely legal in some places.

As of 2015, an average of 67 percent of all students enrolled full-time get financial support for their education. However, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) does not account for transgender students, or anyone whose sex does not align with the one they were assigned at birth. There are still many queer students who do get financial aid or scholarships, but only by often erasing a major part of their identity.

Anyone who’s been paying even the slightest attention has by now heard of the string of terrorist acts and attempted terrorist attacks carried out over the past few weeks. The sudden surge in home-grown right-wing terrorism reflects the horrid state of American politics, with some citizens deciding to voice their opinions with bullets and bombs rather than ballots.

Upon careful consideration of the merits of both tickets, The Daily Gamecock endorses James Smith and Mandy Powers Norrell for governor and lieutenant governor, respectively. We believe that Smith adequately addressed many of the issues that we, as students and young adults, care about deeply and offered policy positions that we can stand behind.

The Daily Gamecock editorial board has decided to run endorsements for the following candidates based on a discussion surrounding the issues each candidate ran on. Multiple senior staff members (paid staff members that appear on our masthead) voted on each candidate based on the particular issues each candidate listed on their campaign website, their congressional website and through their official vote records (if they were an incumbent).

To this day, there are only seven states in America that have laws prohibiting the promotion of homosexuality in a classroom setting. South Carolina is one of them. While commonly referred to as "No Promo Homo" laws, these codes usually allude to the LGBTQ+ community as a whole, or as the state government calls them, “alternate sexual lifestyles.”

With midterms coming up, many students could use some pawsitivity in their lives. For some, they already have it in the form of an emotional support animal, or ESA. Animals are often amazing companions, they help relieve stress and they are constantly showing love for their owners. Some animals are even able to sense illness and stress in humans and try to comfort them.

Conor McGregor is back in the spotlight after his submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov, a Dagestani fighter from Russia. The post-fight brawl that broke out in the audience, however, was the event that really captured headlines after Nurmagomedov leapt over the ring and attacked McGregor’s trainer. The entire end to the fight really is a good metaphor for McGregor’s public life, being that it took what should have been a good show and brought down any sense of class or decency.

Elizabeth Warren has no credible claims to Native American heritage. Warren’s DNA results have not proven her assertions of identifying as Native American. Yet she still portrays herself as having proven something with this “evidence” and demands attention and recognition. In reality, Warren has proven nothing other than the fact that she has once again claimed to be something she has no right to, in order to further her own personal agenda.

Everywhere you look today, democracy seems to be under siege. From Hungary to the Philippines, democracy is clearly in crisis as populist and authoritarian figures rise to power across the globe. In addition to the usual right-wing suspects, democracy now also faces a new and potentially insurmountable adversary: our present climate catastrophe.

If there was a disease that caused 30,000 new cases of cancer every year and had no cure, wouldn’t you want to be vaccinated against it? What about if you knew that a quarter of all men and a fifth of all women already have it? Or that many people have it but don’t know it?

There is no doubt that afternoon football games can suck due to how extremely hot it can be. Few if any enjoy standing in the stadium, which is practically an oven during these games, while being blasted by the sun. In fact, this past Saturday was absolute hell for some before the rain hit with temperatures up in the 90s. These circumstances, combined with fans drinking alcohol, can lead to a lot of dehydration and potential for serious heat strokes.

Perhaps the single most positive political development in the United States over the past decade has been the clear movement away from prohibition when it comes to the world’s most widely used illicit substance. These days, a clear majority of U.S. citizens support the legalization of marijuana and more and more states are moving towards legalizing the drug in some capacity, be it medicinal or recreational. New Jersey seems poised to legalize the drug eventually and as the years go by it seems inevitable that more and more states will continue to make the sensible decision toward legalization.

The other day country icon Willie Nelson got into some hot water with his more conservative fans over his very public support for Beto O’Rourke, a Democratic candidate for Congress from Texas. For those who don’t know, O’Rouke’s campaign has garnered public attention because he is directly challenging Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, and preliminary polls suggest he may even win.
