South Carolina aced their biggest test of the season, sweeping the No. 6 Ole Miss Rebels on the road this weekend. The series got bumped up to a Thursday start to give the players and coaches a day off on Easter Sunday. South Carolina’s starting rotation combined for 26 strikeouts in 20.2 innings to shut down a productive Ole Miss lineup.

After over a half decade of tension and enmity, the United States and Cuba celebrated their mutual pastime of baseball in an exhibition game between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Cuban National Team. If John Jones had not already won over the hearts of Gamecock Nation, he definitely accomplished that in the weekend series against Arkansas. The sophomore catcher and designated hitter had a five-RBI performance Sunday that included a dramatic three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jones' clutch hitting enabled the Gamecocks to come back from a 6-1 deficit to earn an 8-6 victory to sweep the No. 13 Razorbacks.

Most baseball programs build their recruiting classes around highly ranked high school seniors who sign with them instead of turning pro, but South Carolina has always had a knack for mining the junior college ranks. Players like L.B. Dantzler, Elliott Caldwell and Steve Pearce all joined the South Carolina program as junior college transfers and turned into stars during their time in Columbia. New Gamecock outfielder Dom Thompson-Williams from Iowa Western Community College looks to carry on that tradition.
