Tailgating grounds named Gamecock Park after months of consideration

Come Thursday, South Carolina fans will be getting pumped up for the football home opener against North Carolina in Gamecock Park.

No, not in the Russell House. The former State Farmer’s Market tailgating grounds have been named after months of submissions and consideration.

USC trustees approved the new name at a Thursday morning meeting, with the backing all but trustee Thomas Cofield. The board consulted donors to USC’s athletic programs, members of the Gamecock Club and the general public before coming to a decision, Athletic Director Ray Tanner said.

Other names that were considered included Gamecock Park at Williams-Brice and Gamecock Park at the Market, Tanner said. USC was open to selling the area’s naming rights, but Tanner said the university did not actively seek out a sponsor.
