WUSC hosted its annual Zombie Walk as part of its fall fundraiser week. Participants started putting zombie makeup on others around 5 p.m. on the Russell House Patio and then walked to the house of a WUSC DJ for a cookout.
“When people wonder what the hell is going on, that just carries us,” said Kate Appelbaum, WUSC’s station manager. “That kind of curiosity is what this event is all about, and I love it.”
Some people attended last year and decided to come out again this year for more gutsy and gory fun.
Many attended the event because of the opportunity to do something fun for Halloween.
“It’s Halloween and it’s free zombie makeup,” Brooke Evans, a second-year biology student, said. “It’s just something to do on Halloween because nothing really starts until later.”
Others were attracted by the opportunity to find an easy Halloween costume.
“I really needed a costume because I had already worn my costume to two other parties and I have another party tonight,” third-year public relations student Haley Rabic said. “I was like, ‘Perfect, I can be a zombie.’ Free zombie makeup. Why not?”
Dr. Neil Levens, who teaches the honors course Psychology of the Zombie Apocalypse, said he believes that people are also drawn to the idea of zombies.
“I think people are drawn to the what-ifs,” Levens said. “Zombies were once people; they aren’t true monsters. It’s the idea that you may have to kill your mother or your father, because they can come back and hurt you.”
