Mickey Rooney, honorary USC doctorate recipient, dies at age 93

Mickey Rooney died Sunday at the age of 93 in his North Hollywood home. According to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s office, Rooney died a natural death.

His accolades include four Academy Awards, an Emmy, a Tony nomination and two Special Oscars in the category of film acheivement.

He also had an honorary doctorate in fine arts from USC, which he received when he spoke during commencement exercises in 2002.

“Today, if you want to do good, you have to get an education,” Rooney said at the time. “With all the computers and technology we have today, it’s a must.”

Rooney was known for a 90-year career that was prodigious in talent and scope. He sang and danced, wrote everything from memoirs and novels to movie scripts and plays. Rooney starred in movies and vaudeville acts alike.

Rooney was in the midst of shooting a movie, “The Strange Case of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde,” with Margaret O’Brien at the time of his death.
