Each year, students at the University of South Carolina gather together and pledge to not sit or sleep for 14 hours straight — all in the name of philanthropy — for the highly anticipated Dance Marathon. As crazy as it sounds, the cause makes the sore legs and tired eyes completely worth it. It’s all “For The Kids," or FTK, as marathoners say.

Dance Marathon is a nationwide movement that raises money for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. Dance Marathon at USC, the largest student-led philanthropy on campus, raises money specifically for Columbia’s Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. Dance Marathon at USC raised $501,528 last year. This year's goal has been set at $600,119.

The only requirement to attend Dance Marathon is to raise a minimum of $119 — one dollar representing each of the 119 children in the Child Life Program at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. Attendees are encouraged to strive for a goal of $250.

Although many Greek organizations participate each year, any student or organization is welcome and encouraged to participate. USC’s 2016 Dance Marathon will be held in the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center on Saturday at 10 a.m. until 12 a.m. Sunday. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday morning.
