The State reports that famous South Carolina author Pat Conroy died Friday evening at his home in Beaufort. He was 70 years old.
Conroy's wife, Cassandra King, released a statement via family friends.
“The water is wide but he has now crossed over,” she said, referencing his memoir "The Water is Wide."
Conroy authored 11 books throughout his life. He released his final work, a memoir, in 2013.
Conroy was a graduate of The Citadel and was inducted into the South Carolina Hall of Fame in 2013.
In February, Conroy announced he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer that had spread.
