Fireflies throw no-hitter in season opener

The Columbia Fireflies got their first win Saturday with a combined no-hitter against the Charleston RiverDogs, WIS reports. Starter Thomas McIlraith went six innings, and he was followed by Alex Palsha and Johnny Magliozzi in the 9-0 victory. The trio combined for 13 strikeouts. David Thompson supplied the team's first home run in the top of the first, scoring two runners and giving the Fireflies an early 3-0 lead. The team will take the field in Columbia for the first time Thursday against Greenville.

Teen dies following Beaufort house party

A Beaufort County teen died Sunday after drinking at a house party, The State reports. Two other partygoers were also hospitalized following the same party, though their conditions were not available. Police were called to the teen's home when he was found unresponsive after coming home from the party, and he was pronounced dead at Beaufort Memorial Hospital. The investigation into the death is ongoing with a forensic autopsy scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina. Criminal charges could be brought against those who supplied the alcohol.

SC county updates 911 center

The Saluda County Emergency 911 center has been upgraded to assist in response times and communication, WLTX reports. The renovations included new radios, a new CAD system and the integration of the Smart911 system. The upgrades totaled about $600,000, and taxpayer money covered about $70,000 of the cost. The project was three years in the making, and it will help with the 50-100 calls the center gets daily.
