"Stop the Violence" calls for gun control

Citizens gathered on the State House lawn Saturday for a "Stop the Violence" rally. Participants laid down on the steps of the building to honor the 49 lives taken in Orlando on June 12, expressed their support for the LGBTQ community and paid respects for the nine lives taken at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston last year. In the wake of such violence, advocates and Democratic senators alike want to prohibit the sale of firearms to those on the terror watch list.

Mother left 2 small children in car

A Lexington County woman is accused of leaving both her 5-year-old and 23-month-old children in her running car. Maria Valazques, 34, was arrested Saturday and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child. The younger child was seen still in its car seat while the 5-year-old was seen jumping from the front to back seats, according to Lexington County officials.

Librarian victorious in 2nd District Democratic primary

After Friday's Richland County delay in vote recount due to technical difficulty and missing data, librarian Arik Bjorn won a tight race in South Carolina's 2nd District Congressional Democratic primary. Bjorn and his supporters labeled his opponent Phil Black, a former republican, a "fake democrat" and officially defeated him Saturday. He will be running against Republican Representative Joe Wilson for the seat in the November election.
