Cities and counties across the Midlands will hold a variety of events in celebration of America's 240th birthday this weekend.

Festivities will begin in the Thoroughbred Country tourism region with Independence Day Celebration. Games, live music provided by Colston Branch Band, food and fireworks are all features of this Friday event. Those nearby can also hear the music and fireworks on 90.5 FM.

The celebration will be held in Veterans Memorial Park near the Barnwell County Airport.

Saturday will see the 4th of July Celebration on Lake Murray, which will include the boat parade and firework viewing at Dreher Island State Park.

According to Lake Murray's website, the boat parade theme is "Saluting Our Troops." Local radio stations will broadcast a choreographed patriotic music show which will signal the start of the firework show.

To top off the July Fourth weekend, EdVenture Children's Museum on Gervais Street will host Military Appreciation Day on Monday.

There have been two previous military appreciation days this year: April 23 and May 30. This one will coincide with the Fourth of July, making it a way for those with a military ID or badge to celebrate the holiday with free admission for service members and their families.
