Spurrier announces book deal

Legendary football coach Steve Spurrier, who finished out his career with the Gamecocks last season, is publishing a memoir, The State reports. Spurrier announced the deal with Blue Rider Press on Twitter Monday. The book, titled "Head Ball Coach: My Life in Football," includes a forward from acclaimed SEC analyst Paul Finebaum. It will hit shelves on Aug. 30 and is available for preorder.


Columbia fire captain fired over Facebook post

City officials terminated a Columbia fire captain over a series of inflammatory Facebook posts, WIS reports. James Morris used derogatory language when describing Black Lives Matter protesters who took to the streets Sunday night. Officials cited "conduct unbecoming" as the reason for the firing.

Driver identified in Horseshoe crash

The man who badly damaged the gates of the historic Horseshoe has been identified, The State reports. Jake Micol, 21, of Columbia, was charged with reckless driving over the incident. Reports indicating he was going over 80 mph at the time of the crash, and that Micol hid from officers in a bush by South Caroliniana Library after the crash. The cost of repairs to the gate is estimated to be over $10,000.
