Demetra departing for Georgia Tech gig

South Carolina broadcaster Andy Demetra is officially making the jump to Georgia Tech athletics. He will have the opportunity to call Yellow Jacket football and men's basketball, host sports radio shows and participate in other athletics department plans.

The 35-year-old accepted the position Monday, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Speculation that the move was coming had been circulating throughout August.

Demetra had been the play-by-play man for Gamecock basketball and baseball for years and had been producing and writing features about Gamecock athletics. He won the South Carolina Broadcaster's Association's radio sportscaster of the year award twice.

In an interview with The State, Demetra expressed gratitude to the Carolina community for giving him his start.

“South Carolina hired me to call women’s basketball when I was a 22-year-old kid from Illinois. I’ll never forget that,” he said. “It’s sad you have to leave a place that means so much to you, but that’s a credit to Gamecock Nation and its fans that I think the absolute world of.”
