Gas leak forces evacuations, closure on Clemson Road

A gas leak shut down portions of Clemson Road and two area businesses Thursday, WIS reports. The Columbia Fire Department evacuated the businesses and closed the road from Old Clemson Road to Quality Court shortly after the call came in Thursday morning. SCE&G also responded to the call and fixed the leak to reopen the area.

SC student to compete on Food Network

A Midlands preteen will have her shot at culinary stardom on the Food Network, The State reports. The ÇrossRoads Middle School sixth grader will be one of 10 contestants participating in the first season of "Food Network Star Kids." If she makes it through the series, Jefferson will get her own show on FoodNetwork.com and a story in Food Network Magazine. The season premiere airs Monday at 8 p.m.

Two manatees wash ashore off Charleston 

Two manatees have died off the coast of Charleston within the last week, The Post and Courier reports. Representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service say the proximity of the two caracasses is highly irregular, and the deaths are raising concerns for environmental scientists. Biologists believe it may be related to toxins in sea grass or other vegetation.
