Columbia man killed in trench collapse

A trench in Camden collapsed and killed a man working on a sewer and water line, WIS reports. The man, identified as 25-year-old Juan Penaloza of Columbia, died at the scene. Another worker escaped the collapse. A city spokesperson said that a subcontractor's failure to put precautions in place caused the collapse. OSHA and the City of Camden are investigating the incident.

North Carolina girl bitten by shark near Myrtle Beach

A 12-year-old girl is expected to recover from a shark attack near Myrtle Beach, WLTX reports. The girl, on vacation from North Carolina, was bitten while swimming over Labor Day weekend. While she is expected to make a full recovery, she has 39 puncture wounds and needed 25 stitches.

Charleston Southern suspends 14 football players amidst investigation

Charleston Southern suspended 14 football players over allegations of improper use of scholarship funds, The Post and Courier reports. The one-game suspension comes just before one of the program's biggest games of the year against top-tier FBS opponent Florida State. This stems from an ongoing investigation into athletes' use of scholarship money at the school's bookstore.
