Man arrested for armed robbery, carjacking

A North Charleston man was caught Saturday by Lexington County deputies after allegedly robbing a convenience store and stealing a car to flee the scene, The State reports. According to Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon, investigators found that 29-year-old John Dytrych robbed Pop's convenience store on South Lake Drive at gunpoint and got away in a car he stole from the Bojangles' next door. Dytrych was arrested and charged with armed robbery and carjacking, among other criminal charges, and he is being held in the Lexington County Detention Center.

Richland Library hosts safe trick-or-treat on Main

In an effort to curb the usual dangers of walking the downtown area of a big city, the Richland County Public Library is hosting a trick-or-treat event for children on Main Street, ABC Columbia reports. "The Not-So-Spooky Halloween Stroll" will offer children a safer, mapped-out environment to stock up on candy from local participating businesses, and there will also be puppet shows featuring children's story characters. The event will not be held in the dark, as it is set to begin at 3 p.m. on Monday and end at 5 p.m.

Teacher sets goal to buy bikes for 650 students

A teacher at Pepperhill Elementary School in North Charleston has decided to purchase a bicycle for each student at the school a new bicycle for Christmas, WLTX reports. After realizing that many of her students have not ridden a bicycle or experienced the freedoms that come with one, Katie Blomquist made it her mission for the year to purchase one for all 650 students. Blomquist started a GoFundMe campaign in September and has raised over $41,000 so far toward her $65,000 goal. "Every child deserves to have a bike," Blomquist said.
