Murder trial begins in death of Dutch Fork student

New testimony from a paramedic marked the beginning of the trial of a man accused of killing a Dutch Fork High School student in 2014, The State reports. The paramedic, who was one of the first on the scene two years ago, testified that the knife allegedly used by Kierin Dennis to kill Da'Von Capers was delivered with a great deal of deadly force. Dennis is accused of killing Capers in an altercation outside a Cook Out after a basketball game between Dennis' and Capers' schools.

United Way launches new flood relief effort

The United Way of the Midlands is launching a new relief initiative for the one year anniversary of historic flooding, WIS reports. The organization set a goal of raising $2 million dollars in the next year for the initiative, called Restoring Hope. The funds will go toward families still working to get back into 250 flood-damaged homes.

Townville shooting charges upped after student death

One of the attempted murder charges against the teen accused of opening fire at Townville Elementary School was upgraded to murder, WLTX reports. The change is a result of the death of 6-year-old Jacob Hall, one of the students who was shot, who succumbed to his injuries. An additional attempted murder charge was also added after another injured student was identified. In total, the teen faces two murder charges, three attempted murder charges and five counts of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
