Storm hits Columbia

The Weather Channel is predicting rain and storms until at least 7 p.m. in Columbia. Large hail is possible, with winds up to 15 mph. Richland and Lexington counties are under a flash flood warning until 4:30 p.m. and a tornado watch until 8 p.m. A tornado warning has been issued for southeast Richland County, with hail up to 1 inch spotted on the radar.

Classes at the University of South Carolina were cancelled starting at 1 p.m., although the Darius Rucker concert is still set for 7:30 p.m. at Colonial Life Arena.

Use caution while driving — just a few inches of water can cause loss of control.

Areas on campus susceptible to flooding:

  • Intersection of Main and Whaley streets
  • Parking lots behind 300 Main St.
  • Parking lots behind Blatt P.E. Center
  • Sumter Street under the railroad bridge
  • Pickens Street under the pedestrian crossing

If there is a tornado warning:

  • Move to an interior hallway on a lower level in the middle of the building you are in
  • Stay away from all windows and glass doors
  • DO NOT use the elevators
  • Close and/or lock all windows and exterior doors
