Picture this: It’s 8 p.m. on a Friday night, and you’re in your school cafeteria. The chairs have been pushed to the edges of the room, creating a dance floor slightly too large for the amount of people there. Maybe you’re wearing a polo and pants, or maybe you’re in a sparkly new dress you bought months ago at Macy’s. Either way, you’re heartbroken because your crush just asked someone else to dance. Soon, the agonizing slow song ends and your favorite bop comes on. You grab your friends, rush to the dance floor and begin to dance your middle school troubles away.

However, those who have lived in Columbia longer know Main Street was not always the lively, urban stretch it is today. First Thursday on Main, a monthly event that features entertainment and dining specials, plays a role in the area’s newfound vibrancy.

Many people will say rock and roll died alongside grunge, meaning Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Green Day and other great rock bands of the 1990s were the last of the genre. In actuality, rock only fell out of mainstream music. Rock never truly died.
