Carolina Cafe dedicates new location to slain employee Carolina Cafe is dedicating its new location to the memory of Kelly Hunnewell, a 33-year-old who was murdered during a robbery attempt while working for the Columbia restaurant a year ago, WIS reported. Hunnewell was a mother of four and had been a baker for the cafe for three years before she was killed in July 2013.


USC Sumter unveils comprehensive new app

USC Sumter students now have everything they need at the touch of an app. They can get everything from news to social media updates, access to current academic and athletic schedules as well as the ability to place an order with the campus food court. “We, like everyone else, realized that we need to have a faster way for current students and potential students to be able to find information in one place,” said Misty Hatfield, marketing and public relations director of USC Sumter.

Beloved professor dies at 84

Harold French, a renowned and well-loved University of South Carolina religious studies professor, passed away Friday after serving the university for 42 years. French, known as “Hal” by students and colleagues, demonstrated a passion for teaching that enriched lives both inside and outside of the classroom.

Program hosts international students

After working for several years, the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management has taken a significant step towards globalization, a major strategic focus for the college by hosting the college’s first international summer program. International students from China and the Caribbean nation of Curacao are taking tourism and business classes at USC this summer. The 47 students and two teachers from Beijing International Studies University will be on campus for three weeks, while the 12 students and one teacher from the Inter-Continental University of the Caribbean will be at USC for five weeks. “The college of HRSM has been devoting energies to international collaborations for at least five years and what we try to do is establish relationships with countries and regions,” said Brian Mihalik dean of the College of HRSM.

WIS viewers protest anchor’s dismissal Demonstrators gathered outside of the WIS-TV building on Gervais Street Friday to protest the release of news anchor Ben Hoover. Supporters of Hoover also rallied on social media following his departure, bringing discussions to Twitter and launching a petition to “Keep Ben Hoover”. The station released a statement Sunday to calm viewers.

WUSC gets nomination

The Free Times nominated WUSC to be Columbia’s best radio station, and voting will continue until June 27. WUSC has been nominated for the award nearly every year, but has only a single “Best of Columbia” sticker adorning its front door. “We are very excited about the nomination,” WUSC music director Mason Youngblood said.
