Letter to the Editor: Rev. G. Bryant Wright does not deserve USC honor

Anti-gay, backwards beliefs of Southern Baptist Convention unacceptable, should not be lauded G. Bryant Wright, newly elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention, is set to receive a doctor of humane letters honorary degree during USC’s graduation commencement. No representative of the Southern Baptist Convention deserves such an honor from this university, unless it is predicated with the fact that the recipient has indeed distinguished himself in something — the continuing propagation of a backward agenda.

Letter to the editor: Writer does not understand atheism

It is apparent that the author of Tuesday’s Letter to the Editor, “Atheism must also face trials,” does not have a clear understanding of what atheism is. The author’s claim that atheism is “America’s most popular new ‘religion’” is both wrong by definition and through his false generalizations. Atheism is simply the refusal of belief in a supernatural deity. No atheist dedicates their existence to pleasing a god or looks for positive assistance in life by praying to one.

Letter to the editor: Jesse Holliday's Letter to the Editor about Pastafarians inaccurate

In his recent Viewpoints article, Jesse Holliday alleged that the Pastafarians at USC “have previously made enormous generalizations by grouping Islamic USC students with radical Islamic terrorists, once even saying that they promote a violent and backward religion.” However, this is completely false. Our organization has never once made so bold a claim. Furthermore, he claims that we “recently spoke out about a table on Greene Street occupied by an Islamic Awareness Group.” As a matter of fact, during the Muslim Student Association’s Islamic Awareness Week, the Pastafarians at USC canceled regular meetings in favor of attending MSA events. We relish every opportunity to learn more about those of other faiths, particularly those to which we are not regularly exposed.

Letter to the Editor: Atheism must also face trials

There is a lot of hypocrisy within America’s most popular new “religion.” This new “religion” I am referring to is atheism. In an article in The Daily Gamecock’s Monday issue titled “Show some respect,” the author complained that fliers promoting atheist awareness were torn down and defaced. He argued that they were hung around campus to promote interfaith understanding. However, the same group that supposedly promotes “interfaith” understanding recently spoke out about a table on Greene Street occupied by an Islamic Awareness Group.

Letter to the editor: Proposed SG initiative for smokers makes little sense

Are you aware that it is illegal to smoke on-campus within 25 feet of a building? Did you know that smoking is prohibited at all USC bus stops? Chances are if you are a student at USC, you are vaguely aware of the restrictions that administration has place on smoking tobacco. One can find the USC tobacco policy online at the university website, and it clearly states through two pages that smoking on campus is prohibited. If it is illegal to smoke cigarettes on USC property, then why would there be talk among Student Government to build pavilions on-campus where smoking would be allowed?

Letter to the Editor: Dubstep more than just beats

Bass-heavy tunes a reflection of modern revolutionary music scene I enjoy reading The Daily Gamecock for its insightful views on the local music scene and for the way that it promotes local artists (Haley Dreis, DJ Rob Banks or The Heist and the Accomplice, when it was a band, to name a few).

Letter to the editor: Current South Carolina law that regards domestic abuse and cesarean sections as pre-existing conditions is unethical

Proposed Senate bill would fix unfair practices Current South Carolina law surrounding health coverage permits insurers to deny coverage to victims of domestic abuse and women who have undergone a cesarean section (based upon either condition). It is imperative that current health coverage policies be expanded and further clarified to ultimately protect both victims of domestic violence and women who have undergone a cesarean section without either circumstance serving as a preexisting condition. A current bill in a Senate subcommittee (General Bill S 0178) proposes this, and the bill’s passing is essential.

Letter to the editor: USC Connect would increase awareness of student opportunities

As one of the students you might consider "connected," I would like to make the case for implementing USC Connect. I see three advisors every semester and am consistently disappointed by the quality of advisement. My advisors ask me what courses I plan to take, but do not ask about my interests, summer travel, research experience, career aspirations ... you get the picture. USC Connect eliminates much of what should be the responsibility of advisors by facilitating a more holistic approach to learning that demands information on internship opportunities, lectures, clubs and maybe even a fellowship opportunity. The result of USC Connect will be active learners inside and outside of the classroom.

Letter to the editor: Corporations should pay equal taxes

I agree with Kevin Carr's Wednesday column that corporations should pay their fair share of taxes. The Republican Party loves to subsidize the rich and create tax loopholes for upper-class donors by scaring the middle- and lower-class with the argument that, with high corporate taxes, companies would have less of an incentive to hire more workers.

Letter to the Editor: Columnist must be better informed before making accusations of President Obama's response to situation in Libya

When reading Chelsey Seidel's "Obama Lacks Backbone in Dealing with Libya" article in Friday's Daily Gamecock, I was appalled that an article attacking Obama with such a trivial and ill-informed attitude had even made it to print. I read the article in the hope of finding an intelligent and informed criticism of the President's response to the situation in Libya. Instead, what I found was a poorly written article taking cheap shots and parroting right-wing political spins.

Letters to the Editor: Students give their thoughts on Haley's choice to remove Darla Moore from board of trustees

Darla Moore invested $70 million in USC's students and their futures. Tommy Cofield donated a few thousand to Nikki Haley for governor. Moore was the first woman to grace the cover of Fortune magazine and was named one of the Top 50 Most Powerful Women in American Business. Cofield was selected as an All-State High School golfer and won a short story award while a student at USC. Want to truly have college students' best interests in mind, Gov. Haley?

Letter to the Editor: In response to Tuesday’s Letter to the Editor from Andrew Cederdahl regarding the “inherently violent” nature of Islam

“And the servants of Most Gracious are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say ‘peace,’” (Quran 25:63). The Quran gives Muslims clear instructions on how to respond to ignorance, and this is my response to the wave of Islamophobia that plagues our country, state and most recently, our university.

Letter to the Editor: Don't vilify GOP

After reading the article “Republican Budget Cuts Will Hurt Workers” in the Feb. 23 edition of the Daily Gamecock I found myself to be very disturbed. I didn’t completely disagree with the journalist’s argument; I mean, let’s be honest, making budget cuts is hard and painful. Everyone wants funding, and in the end some are simply just cut out.
