“Racially charged” is a new term being thrown around by media outlets as an escape hatch to calling someone a racist in any form of dispute or scandal. Two weeks ago, actor Jussie Smollett was attacked by two unknown men. The attack included the assailants supposedly wrapping a rope around Smollett’s neck while yelling racial slurs and saying, “This is MAGA country.” Additionally, police identified a chemical poured on Smollett that was possibly bleach. Yet there seems to be some question of whether these attacks were intentionally targeting a homosexual, African-American man.

The amount of stress from college that many students experience can be hard to handle. Workloads become heavy with readings, papers, projects and more. It also can be hard to find the time to see friends and catch up. There's one thing I’ve noticed that seems to be relieving these worries: a pet.

In the strange, cynical world we live in, it is easy to get lost in the angst surrounding Valentine’s Day. However, even if it is just a holiday made to exploit human relationships for corporate gain, it also can be pretty beautiful, and people really want to share with the world how beautiful their relationships are.

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, there's a lot of pressure to make plans and focus on “love.” However, I see love as such an obscure concept. We say “I love you” to friends and family every day, but suddenly it means something completely different when said to a significant other.

Oh, Valentine’s Day, the day where everyone that has a significant other celebrates, and those that don’t spend the night watching Netflix and eating Ben and Jerry’s. We say that Valentine’s Day is a day for love, but we seem to ignore one of the most important types of love we have: friendship.

The idea of pain should not be considered poetic, period. However, there is always a need for three-dimensional characters and emotions, even if the mere subject of agony should not come with a pillow of romance. In the same sense, though, the idea that artists have to be sad in order to make quality content has always frustrated me. I hate that when you tell someone that you are an artist they immediately stereotype you as struggling.

I am scared to hold my girlfriend’s hand in public. For years, I have seen people pull off multi-colored pins and rainbow bracelets after pride in order to stay safe on their rides home, and while the world has become much more friendly towards the LGBTQ+ community, a lot of us still live in fear.

In today’s society it is easy to claim someone is being “too sensitive” or a “special snowflake” in response to them calling out your blatant discrimination that you have disguised as “jokes.” However, when it comes down to it, some folks just don't have a good sense of humor.

Who would have thought that an insolent child could throw a 35-day long tantrum? Well, the government was shut down for 35 days. That marked the longest government shutdown since Clinton in 1995. One must think there are very specific and grand reasons for such a shutdown, seeing as there were approximately 420,000 federal employees that were working without pay.

Hillary Clinton’s former campaign chairman John Podesta revealed this week that “Hillary 2020” is out of the question. Ever since her startling defeat at the tiny hands of one of the most unqualified men ever to seriously run for office, there’s been much media speculation as to whether or not a potential 2016 rematch is in the works. With that question finally laid to rest, the Democrats can now work on forging a path forward and can complete the rebranding of their party that is currently underway.

Poker in South Carolina is illegal — very illegal — but it shouldn’t be since college students could benefit from playing. Current South Carolina law says that it is against the law to play poker, even if there is no money involved, yet the game teaches a variety of skills that can help develop a young student into a headstrong, successful adult.

Although kitchens are common in residence halls, students cooking for themselves seems subtly discouraged. Things promoting this attitude include a lack of kitchen space and a required meal plan.

When I was 17 years old, I did not understand the impact of certain relationships and how they can be deemed inappropriate. I was close friends with one of my teachers to the point of it seeming like we were best friends. The importance of voting continues to be underestimated, especially by students. The voter turnout is usually low for people in this age group, with only 17 percent of 18 to 24-year-olds casting a ballot in the 2014 elections. There needs to be more awareness at USC of the importance of this civic duty because it determines the future of our country, and student voices need to be heard.
